FIRST MEETING
(for Dori Hartley who wrote, "I loved you way before we met.")

We talk and drink champagne.
I tell you you're terrific.
To my relief you know it.
You tell me I'm perceptive
and I thank you for the notice.
I don't tell you that I love you,
that "I loved you way before we met."
You're a poet and I wouldn't steal your lines
except I sometimes plagiarize the ones I love, respect.
When you leave, I paste a star inside your glass
to note my envy of the place your mouth has been.
When you leave I wonder,
I wonder when
we'll meet again.
